Dearborn wildlife control Tip of the Month:

What animals chew on electric wires?
Animals that have found their way into your home to nest and live can become a problem due to the damage they can cause. The most common types of damage related to animal infestations include stains, odors, damage to insulation and stored items, structural damage to your home and arguably the most serious, damage to electrical wiring. The most common types of animals to chew through electric wires are raccoons, rats, and squirrels.

Why do raccoons, rats, and squirrels chew on the electric wires while living in your attic?
The teeth of rodents, such as rats and squirrels, continuously grow throughout their lives, rather than stopping at adulthood like ours. This means they constantly need to be worn down for their health and they do this by chewing. These animals are not particularly fussy about what they chew on to wear their teeth down and will have no qualms chewing straight through your wooden walls and electrical wiring. Raccoons are not rodents and do not need to chew to wear their teeth down, however, there has been evidence of them chewing through and damaging electric wires. The reason they do this is unknown and likely linked to their natural behavior.

How to prevent raccoons, rats, and squirrels from chewing on your electric wires
Preventing raccoons, rats, and squirrels from chewing and causing damage to your electric wires is extremely important. Damaged wires can cause serious health and safety risks.

· Humanely trap and remove the animals from your attic
If you are aware of an infestation in your attic you will first need to identify which species has made it their home. You can do this by identifying their feces, the type of damage they may have caused, and by actually sighting them leaving your attic. Purchase the correct size live trap for the species you want to catch, these can be purchased online. Place the trap in a location you are aware the animal will tread and use bait to encourage them to enter. Once set be sure to check on it regularly as trapped animals become anxious and distressed. When you have trapped an animal, cover the trap in a towel and blanket and carefully transport it to be released at least 5 miles away from your home.

· Fix and seal up any holes that raccoons, rats, and squirrels have used as entry into your attic
This also goes for those who have not yet had an infestation, it is always better to put preventive measures in place just in case. Animals will often chew holes to squeeze into your home and attic so you will need to find every hole and seal them up to prevent them from returning. Place mesh wiring over air ducts and vents as animals have also been known to travel through them.

· Apply animal repellent and discouraging measures to your attic
Once the animals have been removed from your attic and all entry points have been closed, you may want to add some animal repellent and other discouraging techniques for further protection. Spray or sprinkle animal repellent near any electric wiring to discourage animals from wanting to go near them. Install motion sensor lighting to scare the animals away. It is possible to make your attic an undesirable environment for animals.

The hope is that with all of this prevention in place these animals will not come into your home and damage your electric wiring. If you fear that your electrics have been damaged during an infestation you can request an electrical system evaluation. A professional will visit your home and assess if there has been any damage and advise you on the cost of fixing it.
